History of Body Rock Dance

Although not always known as Body Rock Dance there has been a dancing school in Wickhambrook since 1975. It first began under the name of Wickhambrook Dance School run by Sue Robinson. She ran the school successfully for many years, with the pupils participating in dancing Exams, Festivals and Shows.

Around 1988 Sue moved to Wales and therefore had to leave the dancing school. She handed it over to Judith Thomas, and the school became known as the Wickhambrook Stage School.

The pupils continued to participate in exams, festivals, Shows and they also began performing at Fetes and Carnivals. Also whilst dancing under Judith some of the pupils were able to perform in musicals and shows with the Bury St Edmunds Operatic Society at the Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds. They also performed at Coventry after successfully completing an audition in Birmingham to perform in the Midland Independent Dance Arts Association Gala Performance.

In 1991 Judith decided to leave dancing and concentrate on teaching, and so the dance school was handed over to Hazelwood School of Dance. This did not continue for long, and Body Rock Dance was formed in the latter part of that year when there became a need to continue dance classes in Wickhambrook.

The small original group from 1991 has become a strong dance school, and is run by girls who began dancing with Sue Robinson.

Annually the girls participate in the Bury St Edmunds Dance Festival and have staged their own Shows during Carnival week.

In 2000 the school saw its own first exam and medal test session where the pupils achieved a 100% pass rate which was great. The girls also participate in the Annually we stage a dance show and Exam and Medal Tests.

2007 saw the first students of Body Rock Dance pass their Student Teaching letters, which invites them to become members of the Midland Independent Dance Arts Association.
