Wickhambrook Horticultural Society Reports

june & julY 2011

Our speaker on Monday 27th June was Guy Barker who came to talk about Summer Colours - Summer Plants, their care and propagation. Quite a few of us sat up in our seats that evening, because lo and behold, Mr Barker was young and very dishy!! (I make a point of this to try and attract some young blood to our monthly meetings). Guy was also very knowledgeable and knew his subject extremely well. He said he had gardened nearly all his life, learning a lot from watching his grandmother when he was very young. He now looks after three large gardens for their owners and shares his love of plants and gardens by giving quite a lot of talks on the subject. He had also brought a selection of his favourite plants, many of which went off to new homes that night.

Our 2011 Summer Flower Show went very well. Although the weather had not been at all kind to gardeners, beginning with the very hot, early, dry Spring and then all sorts of inclement weather, the entries were good. The Society would like to thank everyone who entered the Show - whether it was vegetables, flowers, plants, fruit, cookery, handicraft or flower arranging. It is a lot of hard work for all the committee to organise the Show and without the support of members and others who enter, we could not stage the Show. Not only is it a lot of work for the committee, it is also a lot of work for all those who enter to keep up this village tradition, so once again thank you all very much. The Cups were presented by Sir David Rowland and the winners for 2011 are as follows -

Badmondisfield Cup - A Day
Clopton Cup - Linda Scott
Flewitt Rose Bowl - Angela Cross
Elizabeth Rolfe Cup - Angela Cross
A Silver Cup - Deirdre Smith
Mapey Rose Bowl - R and R Smart
Family Cup - Swift Family
Genesis Green Cup - A Day
W I Shield - Jean Coe
Crystal Fruit Bowl - A Day
Ivy Hicks Bowl - Emily Swift
Bailey Sweet Pea Cup - R and R Smart
Helen Long Trophy - Linda Scott

After our summer break, we begin our monthly meetings again on Monday 19th September with a talk entitled "Growing Orchids" given by Colin Thorburn and then on Monday 17th October we have a talk given by Barry Kaufmann-Wright entitled "Life as a Wildlife Crime Officer".
