Wickhambrook Horticultural Society Reports

January 2012

Unfortunately I missed the first talk of the year on the 23rd January when Mr Rob Parker spoke about Butterflies in your Garden. However I have been told by several people what an enjoyable evening this was with Mr Parker showing lovely slides and giving a very good, informative talk.

Coach trip to Houghton Hall, Norfolk
Our annual coach trip this year is to Houghton Hall on Thursday, 14th June. The price includes entrance into the Hall, Gardens and coach fare and is £25. We are leaving Wickhambrook MSC at 9.30 a.m. and will be back in the village at approximately 6 o'clock. This is a new destination for the Horticultural Society and it sounds a delightful place to visit. There is a restaurant which provides light bites, drinks and cakes, etc or you can take your own picnic to enjoy. Diane Clarke is organising this day out for us and her telephone number is 01638 500169 if you are interested in the outing.

The Annual Summer Flower Show this year will be on Saturday, 14th July. Again this year there will be no Carnival or Fayre as no volunteers have come forth to organise such. However, there will be teas and coffees and lovely home made cakes baked by the W.I. in the W.I. Hall, so, hopefully, it will still be a lovely afternoon out. We will need all the support that you can possibly give us this year if, like many events in Wickhambrook, the annual Flower Show is not to disappear into the mists of time. For a few years now (whilst there was a week of events and Fayre) the Horticultural Society has not had to pay for the hire of the Hall for the Flower Show. However, this began to change last year when we had to pay £40 for the Hall and this year we have to pay £70 for the use of the Hall. Whilst we realise that this is still a hugely subsidised amount, with the expense of the printing of the Schedules and for the Judges (Vegetables and flower judge, flower arranging judge, cookery judge and handicraft judge) the Flower Show is quite expensive to stage. Although we have a raffle (which is normally very well supported) our only other income to support the Show is the entrance fee paid, which for as many years as I can remember has always been 50p for adults and children free. The Committee did consider increasing the entry fee, but we have decided not to this year in the hope that you will continue to support us.

On Monday 27th February we have a talk entitled "The Making of a Garden on Breckland Sand" given by Yvonne and David Leonard and then on Monday 26th March, we have "Fruit, Vegetables and Flower in Containers" - a talk given by Peter Morris and on Monday, 23rd April, a talk on Carnivorous Plants given by Steve Fraser.

All evenings begin at 7.30 p.m. in the W.I. Hall and new members are always welcome. Our annual membership fee is £5 and our meetings £1 for members and £2 for non-members.

Our Annual Membership is 5, with meetings costing 1 to members and 2 to non-members. We would love to see some new members and you can be sure of a warm and friendly welcome.

Subscriptions are payable to the Treasurer each January.

Our talks usually last for about an hour and then we have a chat with other members whilst enjoying tea/coffee and biscuits. The talks cover a range of different aspects of gardening and our programme is planned to provide something of interest to each and everyone of us.
