We were very pleased to welcome Lindsay Lee to our February meeting and her talk with slides about Sutton Hoo was greatly enjoyed by all who attended. This was a huge subject to tackle in a couple of hours, but Lindsay kept it in perspective by talking about the people involved in the site from the ‘Dark Ages’ (now known by the more PC title of ‘The Migration period’) to the present day.
‘King’Raedwald and his wife and the ship burial with its mounds were well known to most of the audience, but there have been discoveries on the site of even earlier inhabitants of the Bronze Age and the Neolithic period, marking Sutton Hoo as a very special place indeed.
We heard about Mrs Pretty who lived there in the 1930s and Basil Brown, the self- taught archaelogist who helped to excavate the mounds and of the treasure they unearthed.
Similar finds near Southend have been discovered recently, and Lindsay answered many questions about this and other aspects of her work. She was thanked by the Chairman, Percy Nunn.
