Wickhambrook Local History Society Reports

june 2005

Douglas Baker of Bungay was the speaker at our June meeting and he gave a very interesting talk entitled ‘Sisters in the Canadian Wilderness’. Katherine Strickland and her sister Susannah were born in Bungay in 1802 and 1803 respectively. They enjoyed a comfortable childhood with their parents and siblings until their father was made bankrupt at the end of the Napoleonic wars. They both married returning soldiers who were given grants of land in the colonies, and set off in 1832 for Quebec. The life they encountered there was very different from what they had been used to, and both endured many hardships along the way without much help from their husbands. They had a great interest in botany and all aspects of the natural world and wrote books and articles which became very popular. A film has been made by a Canadian company of the lives of these intriguing sisters but it has yet to be seen in this country.

Horticultural Society Bring and Buy

Lidgate Open Gardens
Sunday 23 June 2013

19 Gardens open. Unveiling of the official plaque to John de Lydgate, paella-fest at the Lidgate Star, craft stalls, table top sales, tea/coffee, bacon rolls and cakes plus a giant raffle. All proceeds to go to Lidgate Village Hall Restoration. Garden entry £5 for adults, children under 8 free and 8 - 16 year olds £2.50. 10am - 5pm - a great day out. See poster

Members Information

Membership costs £8 per year payable in April plus 50p for each meeting.

Guests are always very welcome - £2 per occasion.

Meetings held at 7.30pm in the W.I. Hall.

Library - The library is now all set up at the Primary School. Please let us know your views on this. (Little Bradley trip - we have bought Wendy Barnes' book for the library).

Many will know that The National Archives gives regular talks on various aspects of family history at the PRO in Kew. Less well known is that they're now available to replay online. Very easy to listen to, providing you've got broadband.
