Wickhambrook Local History Society Reports

January 2012 : I REMEMBER WHEN...

The first meeting of the year was a series of talks by members entitled 'I remember when..'

John Norton shared his memories of growing up in Newcastle and Yorkshire during the war. He recalled gas masks, local bombing raids and rationing and his talk was well received by the audience, many of whom shared similar times.

Andrew Blaza sailed from Southampton to South Africa in 1967, aboard the RMS Windsor Castle, through stormy weather . He had taken his car with him as he was journeying on to Malawi. There were many tales to tell – we wished we had had more time to ask questions. Andrew had followed the fortunes of the ship after she was sold on, and bought some mementoes when she was broken up. Amazingly, he was able to buy the Ship's Log of the very voyage he had undertaken.

Barrie Stevenson took us back to his Granny's kitchen. Room by room, he could recall the very typical furniture and furnishings of the time – a nostalgia trip for all! The next meeting is on Tuesday 21st February when Pip Wright will talk on 'Stories from Old Newspapers'.

Meetings are held in the WI Hall at 7.30pm and all are welcome.
