Looking forward to another busy but enjoyable year members met to hear all about Monopoly, not just a game in the words of our speaker Grant Elliot and so it proved to be.
He spoke of the invention of the game by Charles Darrow in the 1920's when it was based around Atlantic City in the U.S.A. The board was originally round in shape but was soon made in a square to fit more easily into a tin which was it's first packaging followed in time by the now familiar cardboard box.
A real devotee of the game Grant told us about many of the weird, daft and amusing stories associated with and surrounding the game and it's continuing worldwide success. He was great fun and it was a fun start to the year.
He joined us to celebrate our 85th birthday with a magnificent harlequin cake made by member Gill Corbyn which was delicious and enjoyed with our usual cuppa.
