Wickhambrook Panto Triumphs again!

Its Panto time at the Memorial Social Centre in Wickhambrook once more and this year’s production by the Wickhambrook Players “Aladdin” has taken to the stage for a run of nine performances.  This year the company have come full circle with a rewrite and revamp by Colin Bird of the very first Pantomime, Aladdin  that the Players ever did.  They have lovingly produced an expertly staged, traditional based production with a large enthusiastic cast complete with dancers and junior chorus plus many more beavering away behind the scenes and in front of house.

The atmosphere in the hall was full of anticipation as the story unfolds in the hands of the excellent actors.

The very funny topical script was delivered with wonderful timing and comic skill and had laughter ringing out across the hall. The “Ying Tong Song” immortalised by the “Goons” was an undoubted highlight along with the classic rendition of “There’s a hole in my wok!!”.

The whole cast worked well together and gave excellent support to the main players to make the production exceptional. The Jeannie of the Ring followed in her mother’s footsteps as she played Aladdin in the original production 18 years ago.

The music was excellent with a tuneful sound out of every kind of voice, accompanying the whole performance and all the singers most professionally and as usual the audience had their annual chance to sing along and this year’s tune was a “wee” gem. The gloriously colourfully designed changes of costume throughout the Panto were once more in the expert hands of the previous designers.

Judging by the roars of approval and delight that came from the audience and the logistics of staging such an impressive show, all involved are to be congratulated on all their hard work and commitment for bringing to the stage such an enjoyable experience for the whole family.

A plea
Do you remember the first panto, a production of Aladdin?
Yes I know it was way back in 1988 but I'm sure some of you do.

What we are asking for is does anyone have any photographs of the production? What we would like to do is mount a display featuring pictures of the cast and the action on stage. (I was going to say acting but that would be stretching everyones credulity.) This is the first time we have repeated a story in seventeen years so it would be rather nice to look back at our first attempt.

Any photographs loaned would be copied and the originals returned to the owner before the show so that they didn't go missing.

If you would like to contribute any pictures please ring Steve Taylor on 820520.

Aladdin
And His Wonderful Lamp

by Colin Bird

Wickhambrook Players WIDELY ACCLAIMED Panto will run from Saturday Jan 21st to Saturday 28th, 2006. Early reservations can be made by telephoning 01440 821120.

Now we have the funding and the venue is booked. So out goes the call for anyone who would like to be involved in some way, to come and join the annual Wickhambrook panto production and performances. From script writer to tea lady, everyone joins in the fun. Have you ever wondered if there's some way you could be involved? Could you:
* Help with make-up?
* Climb a ladder to hang some lights?
* Distribute a handful (or even a bag-full) of leaflets during the quiet week between Christmas and New Year?
* Operate a camcorder to record a few performances?
* Chaperone the kids backstage for a performance or two?
* Help cobble together some scenery?
* Take a deep breath and 'deliver' some lines? ("Oh yes you can…!")
* Be part of the scene-changing stage crew?
* Be one of the Front of House team (eg. Sell some programmes to the incoming audience)?
* Face the lights as an on-stage 'spear-carrying' member of the chorus? … the list of things we do goes on, and there could be a small (or large) role for you.

If you would like to know more, but have been too nervous to ask, in case you might be talked into something you'd regret, but if, nevertheless, you are just a bit curious… Why not have a quiet word with one of the 'old hands'. There's no commitment by simply asking, there's nothing to be lost by finding out if it's 'for you', and there's much to be gained by joining this year's panto crazies. Just call any one of the following Players principals:
Chairperson; Jo Stokes
Secretary; Peter Bayman
Treasurer; Jeff Goodacre
This year's scriptwriter; Colin Bird (01440 820606) A venerable 'old hand' with many pantos to his credit;
Jim Fieldsend (01440 820108)
This year's Production Manager; Steve Taylor (01440 820520)
…or any member of the Players committee or club. If you don't ask, you'll never know what you're missing.
