come and join the Wickhambrook Outdoor Bowls Club
players from all districts most welcome

There is every possibility at the end of the current season that the village bowls club (8 line rink built to the highest specifications a few years ago) will fold.  The few playing members are succumbing to aches and pains and the younger generation is not interested. If any of your parishioners (individuals or groups) would like to join and/or take on the running of these first class facilities, please contact Roger Medley (Parish Clerk)

Reports

A new Bowls Season is about to start. The Green is in good condition, and it will be opened shortly for all those who wish to play. We have one team in the Steeple Bumpstead League, and are now looking for casual bowlers to play at times when it suits them, weekends or evening etc.

New bowlers can have roll ups and can enter club competitions of they wish, for a nominal fee of £10 for the Season. Flat shoes must be worn to protect the Green.

The Bowls Club has been going for 15 years and we don't want it to close, so please come along and support us. We have several sets of bowls which will be available for your use.

Whilst the League Season did not turn out to be the most successful in terms of results, it was probably one of the most enjoyable in the Club's history. The obvious good spirit in which the matches were played reflected great credit on the players and their opponents. As has been reported previously, the playing condition of the green received many compliments throughtout the season. The willing band of playing members who put many hours of their time to achieve this vastly improved standard deserve the praise. Appreciation should also be given to the Parish Council for their support. The Club attracted new members and some of these made their debut in League Matches.

On 6th September, the Club held the Annual Presentation Dinner at "The Three Horseshoes" in Barrow. Some 23 members and guests attended and it was unanimously voted a great success. The trophies were presented by Stan Bates, the club Chairman, to the following:-

2005 IN HOUSE COMPETITION RESULTS
Singles: Doubles: Triples:
Winner Alan Lightley Winners Roy Osbourn Winners Pauline Burningham
Runner up Ivan Peacock   Ivan Peacock   Don MacSwan
Runners Up Stan Bates   Alan Lightley
Horace Eastley Runners Up  Doreen Osbourn
          Peter Lister
          Horace Eastley

The outcome of the season is that the members of the Club, by their own efforts and with some outside support, have kept the Club going and we have proved those people wrong who doubted our ability and willingness to do so. As a result the Club is in a stronger position that 12 months ago and we look forward to the 2006 Season with increased optimism.

Alan Lightley (Published in The Scene Issue 219)

I have been asked to write an article for the Scene to tell everyone in Wickhambrook and the surrounding villages that the Bowling Club is NOT closing down. I am aware that a lot of rumours have been circulating the Club was at 'death's door' and that the 2004 Season would be its last. I can assure people that the rumours are not true.

During the Autumn, Club members, with the moral support and encouragement of the Parish Council, have worked to bring the bowling green up to a better standard. There is good spirit of optimism and enthusiasm among the members to keep the Club going.

Moreover, we have had clear indications that a number of people are seriously interested in playing Bowls and swelling our numbers. We have agreed that all new members, male or female, will have an opportunity to play for their first year for a token annual prescription of £10. No further cost is necessary - the Club will supply a set of bowls. No need to purchase any equipment, except for flat shoes to protect the green.

New members may feel unprepared or inexperienced to take part in matches against other Clubs. No worry, you can just come along on 'club evenings' - probably Wednesdays - and enjoy the friendship and enjoyment of a 'roll-up'. Experienced players will be there to give advice and guidance on the skills of the game. What could be better on a Summer evening than having a little gentle exercise in pleasant company. If you are interested, please contact any member of the Committee listed below, or come along and watch - you won't regret it. Just come along for a trial evening and see how you like it - without commitment.
