In August we circulated a message stating that there had been an increase in thefts of lead from roofs. Thefts of all metals has continued county wide and nationally. Over the last week in Suffolk alone there have been thefts of copper piping from a village hall in East Suffolk, and from a building site at Red Lodge. Thefts of lead from church roofs is continuing, in Haverhill, lead was stolen from the sports centre roof and in Ipswich, lead was stolen from the roof of a house extension. To steal metals in this way requires some time at the scene and a substantial vehicle to remove the stolen items. Police need to be informed immediately by use of the 999 system if any suspicious activity is observed. Have you seen any unusual activity recently? Have you an idea as to where the stolen metal is going? Has anyone approached you offering to purchase scrap metal|? If you have any information that could assist in identifying who is responsible for these thefts please telephone 01473 613500.

Following information circulated recently we have had instances of bogus workmen, calling on homes near to where genuine road works are taking place. Claiming to be a road worker, they try to gain entry to turn off the water or gas or electricity. Last week, in Stowmarket, we learned of a person claiming to be from a charity asking for bank details to set up a direct debit. The householder became suspicious and asked the person to leave a direct debit form that they could look at in there own time. The person panicked and made off. If you have such a caller do not give details on the doorstep, ask them to leave charity literature and a direct debit form with you. These methods are recent examples. Bogus callers come in many different guises. Suffolk is a safe county and the likelihood of you becoming a victim of bogus callers is very small, with a little extra vigilance you can reduce that risk even lower. In cases of emergency always dial 999. Thank you. (placed on website 25.07.07)

If you are unsure of authenticity, do not let them into your home and call 999 immediately.

Police have been made aware of an incident in which an individual who was selling electrical services approached an elderly resident. The service was expensive and possibly not appropriate for the lady, who was left confused about what she had agreed to. The caller had made no prior agreement to visit and had simply turned up on the doorstep.
Suffolk Police remind you to be careful with callers, particularly those who do just turn up on your doorstep. If they are selling something, is it something that you need? If not, why buy from someone you know nothing about? If you are unsure, ask them to return at another time, when you could have a friend or relative with you.
Most importantly, check identification, and do not let anyone into your home unless you are entirely happy with who they are. There are many bona fide traders but there are those who seek to take advantage of the vulnerable. Give them short shrift, just say, No thank you and close the door.
If you believe that you have bogus callers at your door ring 999 straight away. (placed on website 15.02.07)
