In December, forty-five members attended the annual
Christmas get-together which was held at the Red Lion, Kirtling.
A good time was had by all, in spite of a crisis in the kitchen!.
The January meeting was a lecture with slides, by Monica Place,
a favourite speaker and old friend of the Society. Her subject
was the Progresses to Suffolk made by Queen Elizabeth the first
and it proved to be very interesting indeed. To be favoured by
a visit from the reigning monarch was a privilege, but also a great
responsibility, as the Queen and her attendants had to be housed,
fed and entertained during their stay. This was a great opportunity
for ‘one- upmanship’ on the part of the hosts who
were keen to impress their Queen. Elizabeth made two visits to
Suffolk. The first, in 1561, was to the Ipswich area, and in 1578
the more inland areas were explored. Hengrave Hall, the home of
Thomas Kytson, welcomed the Queen, who carried on the affairs of
State during the visit. The government of England was carried on
wherever the Queen and her advisers were in residence.
