At the February meeting of the society, Stewart Bowell gave a very interesting talk with slides on “The remains of conflict from earthworks to pillboxes”. East Anglia is full of sites such as these, from the earthworks at Worham in Norfolk to the W.W. 2 Research station at Orford. Stewart is an excellent photographer and his slides of castles, fortified houses and forts ably illustrated his talk. Most people felt the urge to (re-)visit many of the places they had seen as they had been shown in a new light.
After the talk, the Chairman Percy Nunn was presented with a card, and a cake baked by Sue Britnell from those present as well as a small gift from the committee to mark his 90th birthday. There cannot be many societies who have a Chairman of his age and Percy is still a very active member of the committee and the society. Under his leadership, membership has swelled to over sixty and attendance at meetings and outings is very high. He also helps many people to trace their ancestors in the area.
At a surprise party, the following weekend, his family and many friends from local churches and societies in the village, drank Percy’s health. Around eighty people were present, a testament to his popularity among all ages.
Meetings are held in the WI Hall at 7.30pm. Information is avaliable from Dorothy(01440 820376) and Gillian (01440 820052).
