March 2004 News
The title of the talk at the March meeting was ‘It’s a grave business’, so members were expecting a fairly serious talk on death and burial, but there was more laughter than tears in Peter Driver’s account of how we have remembered our dead through the ages. Leaving out the Victorians (‘too sad and sentimental’, according to the speaker), we were shown many interesting and amusing memorials, mostly from Suffolk. Romans, Tudors and Jacobeans had all been victims of the dialect and spelling of the old Suffolk boys who carved their names - King Louis of France becoming Lewis on his wife’s tomb in St Mary’s Church in Bury.

Peter Driver is keen to keep the dialect alive, and his audience enjoyed every minute of his talk

A very successful and enjoyable social evening was held on Saturday 20th March in the WI Hall. Although it was a very stormy night, we managed to escape any powercuts, and were able to appreciate the talents of Neil Lanham and friends as they sang, told stories and danced.
