May 2004 News
Fifty members and friends were fortunate to take part in a visit to Giffords Hall, which had been postponed because of snow earlier in the year. Tours of the house and garden were conducted by the owners, Sir David and Lady Diana Rowland, and those who had been before were most impressed by the sympathetic and beautiful renovation of this beautiful building,as well as the innovations in the garden, while those making their first visit were speechless with admiration. It was a privilege to be able to wander around a private house, and Percy Nunn, Chairman of the Society, thanked Sir David and Lady Diana for their hospitality.

The May meeting on the 18th welcomed the return of Anne Grimshaw. Her talk was entitled 'A Weaver at Waterloo', an account of the life of one of her forebears who left the troubled state of the Lancashire weaving industry to enlist in the Coldstream Guards. He later fought in the Penisular Wars, the Low countries and finally at Waterloo. Sometime afterwards as a result of his wounds he was honourably discharged with a small pension.

Anne had done the most exhaustive research into both civil and army records and held the attention of a well attended meeting with great skill. She was warmly applauded for a fascinating discourse.

There will be other visits to places of historic interest in June and July. Details will be advertised shortly and early booking is advisable
