May 2005 News
The weather was very kind for the first outing of the Society this season. It was a pleasure to explore All Saints’ Church and Churchyard in Little Bradley in the evening sunshine and we were privileged to have a guided tour in the company of Wendy Barnes ,whose knowledge of her subject and communication skills brought the past alive. There has been a church on this spot since the 10th or early 11th century, and we were shown the building styles which proved this. Wendy’s several years of painstaking research brought these early worshippers close, and she could even name some of the 14th century villagers, many of whose names betray their Norman origins. Inside this beautiful little church there are brasses and tombs of local families in the 16th century, the most famous of whom is John Daye, the printer responsible for ‘Fox’s Book of Martyrs’ which in its day was second in importance to the Bible. The Churchyard has some interesting gravestones which are explained in Wendy Barnes’ book ‘Little Bradley - The People and their Church. The evening finished with refreshments in the church and an opportunity to look around.
