July 2005 News
On the afternoon of July 13th, About twenty members of the History society met Mrs Jackie Whiting, Head Teacher, at Wickhambrook Primary School. The object was to confirm the arrangement with the School Library to improve the access of members to the ever-increasing number of books that the Society is acquiring. The School has made space to enable the Society to put in shelving and co-operate with the School Librarian on Wednesday afternoons during term time. Mrs Whiting then took the party on a tour of the School and its facilities which was much appreciated. Mrs Whiting was warmly thanked for the generous use of her time. The History Society Library is dedicated to the memory of two ‘old boys’ of the School. The late Alf Hicks founded the Society in 1996, and bequeathed to it his collection of books. The late Clement Fuller, a past Chairman, left the Society a bequest which was used to finance the project. The Library is for the use of the children, Staff and parents of the School as well as members of the History Society.

About 30 members enjoyed an evening visit to Culford School. The beautiful house, grounds and Church were toured in the company of Clive Paine who is an expert in all local history matters. His unique blend of knowledge and wit ensured that everyone learned something new in the most appealing way.

The House at Culford was built for the Bacon family and was a Tudor building. It then was acquired by the Marquis of Cornwallis who ‘Georgianised’ it in a most unusual way by facing the entire outside with Culford brick and modernising the interior during the 1790s. At the beginning of the 19th Century, the Hall was bought by Richard Benyon, whose nephew, Edward, a vicar, knocked down and rebuilt the splendid Church. The estate then was bought by the Cadogan family in 1894, when it became a wonderful Victorian Country House.

It was a real privilege to see inside this lovely building.
