The History Society has had two excellent and well - attended outings. The first was to Mildenhall, where wet weather made the proposed river walk impractical, but members were taken instead to visit one of the oldest dove-cots in the world and the beautiful Church of St Mary’s where the stained glass windows and carved angels were much admired. The evening ended with a visit to the Museum to see replicas of the Mildenhall Treasure as well as many other interesting artefacts.
The weather was perfect for our visit to Ashfield Green Farm. On a mild, clear and still evening Dr Roger Draycott led us on a walk to show how he is adapting the farm to make it more sustainable for insect and bird life. Around the fields and on headlands, crops have been planted to encourage wildlife by providing shelter as well as food. During the walk we learned that one of the fields had been used as a decoy airfield during the war and we were shown a piece of electric cable from it which had come to light after recent ploughing. Dr Philip Draycott told us about the barns and their construction while we enjoyed a glass of wine.
On August 1st, we will be visiting the Roman Villa at Gestingthorpe. Leaving Wickhambrook at 1.45pm. Please contact Gillian (01440 820052) if you would loke to join us. |
