The September meeting of the Society was a lively
and stimulating start to the Autumn programme. The speaker, Mike
Petty, is a writer and journalist who writes a poular column in
the Cambridge Evening News and he took us on a ‘ visit ‘
to Cambridge in the company of Mr Pickwick. This was a wonderful
blend of fact and fiction, myth and anecdote all enlivened by dialect
and excellent slides of Cambridge around 1838, the year of Queen
Victoria’s Coronation, when most of the land around the Colleges
was still fields. This was a most entertaining evening, giving us
a glimpse of the Dickensian world still visible today.
