Our Speaker at the October meeting was Tony Redman, who pointed out that his subject- Myths and Superstition in Buildings - was the perfect choice for this month when our thoughts turn to Hallowe’en. Medieval man was dependent on many practices to help him get on with his life. When praying to saints was banned at the Reformation, people found ways of incorporating the whole ‘touch wood’ throwback to earlier times in their daily life and work. Mr Redman admitted that we will never really know why marks were scratched on chimney breasts, doors and windows, but it is a fairly safe bet that they were to do with keeping evil out of the house. He was thanked by Dorothy Anderson.
Next month, on November 21st at 7.30 in the WI Hall, Pip Wright will give a talk on convicts who were transported to Australia. ‘For the Rest of their Natural Life.’
All are welcome to attend the meeting. Please call Dorothy (01440 820376) or Gillian (01440 820052) for more information.
Those attending the Chrismas Dinner on 7th December are asked to return menus and deposits to Gillian as soon as possible.
