Our meeting in June was a talk on the work of the
Suffolk Wildlife Trust throughout the County. Mrs Grimwade
from Ipswich is one of the thousands of volunteers for the Trust
and she is passionate about her interest in wildlife. This
passion came out in the beauty of her slides which she brought
along. We travelled through Bradfield Woods to Redgrave
and Lopham Fens and then along the Suffolk coast and various estuaries.
and many places in between. We learnt about how land is
managed to encourage wildlife and also how wild flowers are encouraged
to grow on certain sites. We are very lucky in this part
of East Anglia because there are lots of wildlife and plant life
to be seen which is not so in many parts of Britain, but this is
so only because of the work of the Trust. Lackford Lakes
near Bury St Edmunds is one of three sites where the Suffolk Wildlife
Trust has inter-active activities especially designed for children
and education. The children are taught about the care of
the countryside and how important it is to look after wildlife
and to provide habitats for them so that they flourish. Mrs
Grimwade was warmly thanked for her interesting and enlightening
talk. She had made many of us want to pack a picnic and go
and explore some of the many regions we had been to by seeing her
slides.
Members were reminded about the Flower Show on the 8th July. There
are still FREE Schedules available from the Shop and from Steve
Coe on 01440 920764. Please have a look through the Schedule
and see what you can enter. There are sections on flowers
and vegetables, flower arranging and all sorts of handicrafts,
cookery and also various items for children to enter. The
Chairman pointed out that if everyone had a go at just one thing,
whatever it may be, then we would have a lovely Show. The
Flower Show in the M.S.C. Hall is open from 2 p.m. and entrance
is 50p. (free for children). So do come along and have a
look around. As well as the Flower Show, the Carnival Committee
have organised various events, and these begin at 12 noon
on the field.
