Mr William Morris was our speaker in October. His
talk was entitled "Propagating Cacti and
Succulents from Seed" which, perhaps, does not sound
particularly interesting or exciting. However, his talk and slides
covered much more than the title suggested and the few members who
were there all really enjoyed the evening. Mr Morris at one time
was a teacher of biology and botany but he was not boring in any
shape or form. He showed us some lovely slides and explained to
us the delicate procedure necessary to progagate your own seeds.
We were all left wondering whether or not we could be successful
at something apparently so easy but yet so intricate. He also explained
the many different ways that nature itself uses to propagate seeds.
Altogether a very interesting talk, but it was such a shame that
not many of our members were there.
We have two meetings in November. The first is on Monday
21st and is a talk entitled "Who
wants to be a Gardener" given by Mr Richard Ayres who,
until he retired, was the Head Gardener at Anglesey Abbey. We are
hoping to attract many visitors for this talk and have written to
nearby villagers. Mr Ayres is well known in this area and we are
looking forward to his visit.
Then on Friday, 25th November we have
our Annual General Meeting. Again we are
hoping for the support of our members and others who are interested
in our Society. The business of the evening is quickly over and
is followed by cheese and wine.
We are trying to encourage more people to join our Horticultural
Society and, if you have not been before, you would be very welcome
at either or both of the above evenings. We are a friendly Society
so no one need be nervous of attending for the first time.
Both of the above meetings will be held in the W.I. Hall and begin
at 7.30 p.m.
