On Monday 19th September our monthly
meetings resumed after the Summer break. It certainly seemed a long
time since our last meeting in June and the Summer Show in July.
Our speaker for the evening was Mr David Bond from Cambridge on
"Looking After Fruit Trees". Mr Bond worked at Scotsdales
Nurseries and had also been a guide at the Cambridge Botanical Gardens
and he had a vast knowledge of his subject. He passed on lots of
advice and tips and we all went home with a bit more knowledge of
what to do with our fruit scab, wholly aphids, vine weevils etc.
etc.
On, Monday 21st November we have Mr Richard Ayres coming to speak
to our Society. Mr Ayres, until he retired, was the Head Gardener
at Anglesey Abbey. His talk is entitled ³Who Wants to be a
Gardener?² and this begins at 7.30pm as usual in the W.I. Hall.
We are hoping to attract a large number of people to listen to Mr
Ayres and for non-members of the Society there will be a charge
of £2 and £1 for members (this is our usual entrance
fee). Mr Ayres love of gardening is well known throughout Suffolk
and further afield and it should prove to be a good evening. The
entrance fee includes either tea or coffee and biscuits and time
for a chat. I am sure that Mr Ayres will be willing to answer peoples
various questions, so, please, please come and support your local
gardening club.
On, Friday 25th November we have our Annual General Meeting (with
cheese and wine). This is usually a very sociable and enjoyable
evening. The business of the evening only lasts about half an hour
so its not too tedious, and then we enjoy a glass (or two) of wine
and again have chance to catch up on what is happening around the
village and have a chat with friends. We have lost a number of members
over the past year due to people moving away from the district,
etc and would love to attract more members. We are a friendly bunch
and assure you that you would receive a very warm welcome. Our speakers
cover a wide range of subjects and are usually interesting and informative,
even if you do not consider yourself to be a keen gardener.
Our meeting on December 12th is a "Grand Quiz Evening"
with The Flora Cup being presented to the winner. This is a fun
quiz really and not as arduous as it sounds!! We usually finish
with tea or coffee and mince pies to celebrate the coming Christmas
period. I look forward to seeing you all at one or all of the above
meetings and before finishing would like to wish everybody a Happy
Christmas and a peaceful, happy and health New Year.
