Our January meeting was a talk given
by Mrs Sylvia Allworthy on her garden at Burrough Green, which
we visited last year. Mrs Allworthy brought along various pots
and containers full of different winter colours, foliage and perfumes,
all from her own garden. The variety of shrubs and other plants
to give life to a winter garden are endless, Mrs Allworthy told
us. We went home full of inspiration and ideas of what we could
do in our own gardens to make them more interesting and colourful
during the cold winter months.
The cookery and handicraft items
for the Summer Flower Show Schedule on the 8th July have now been
chosen. Dorothy Lightly had made two different fruit cakes for
members to taste and chose their favourite, and this - a mixed
fruit cake with chopped pineapple - will be the 'cake with recipe'
item.
Jackie mentioned that although entries for the Flower Show
were good last year, the actual garden competition entries were
well down - there were only four, which hardly makes it worth asking
a Judge to give up time to come along to Wickhambrook to do the
actual judging. This year we are asking more people to make their
gardens available for judging . It only costs 20p to enter and
there are two cups to be won - Best Cottage Garden - for the Giffords
Cup and the Best Kept Flower Garden - for the William and Nancy
King Cup. As well as the cups there are 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes
of £3, £2 and £1. So please think about entering
your own garden - you do not have to be a member of the Horticultural
Society - it is open to everyone in Wickhambrook and adjoining
villages.
Coach Trips
We are planning two coach trips this year
- one to Wisley Gardens on Wednesday 10th May and one to Sandringham
Flower Show on Wednesday 26th July. They will both leave Wickhambrook
at 8 o'clock and leave for home at 5 o'clock. Costings at the moment
are approximate but the May trip will be around £13 and July
one around £16 (inclusive of admission charge). If you would
like to put your name down for either trip please ring me on 01440
820108. As usual, I would like a £5 per person deposit. Everyone
is welcome - you do not have to be a member of the Society to come
along.
Forthcoming Meetings
Our March meeting is on the 27th March
and is a talk on Water Gardens by Geoffrey Peck and then on the
24th April we have a talk by Lucy Redman of the Lucy Redman School
of Garden Design talking on Gardening at Rushbrooke. All our meetings
are held in the W.I. Hall and begin at 7.30pm and new members are
always welcome.
