News - January - April 2007

Our first meeting of 2007 proved to be a really interesting talk by Mr Andrew Jackson on plants which are “Garden Worthy and decorative with added value”. Mr Jackson is very interested in photography and his slides bore this out. Many of the slides were taken locally in areas which you would never think of going to find such colourful specimens - such as Sainsbury’s car park in Haverhill and even in the grave yard of the Parish Church in that town!! I think we all went home with ideas about how we could extend the autumn colour in our own gardens as well as wanting to extend the number of months in the year that our own gardens could provide interest and colour. He was warmly thanked by our Vice-Chairman Stan Bates.

On the 16th March we have our Social Evening in the Bar Room of the M.S.C. Names are being taken for this by our new Treasurer, Maria Sumner, whose telephone number is 01440 820222. As usual we have asked Esme Jolland and her helpers to cater for the evening and the cost - for 3 courses, followed by cheese and biscuits and coffee - will be £13.50. Numbers are limited, so members please put your names down quickly.

Our March monthly meeting on the 26th March is on “Alpine Campanulas” - a talk given by Sue Wooster and on the 23rd April we have a talk by Karen Kenny of Suffolk Radio talking about Companion Planting. Please see additional information elsewhere in the Scene about the April meeting.

This is advance notice about our Coffee Evening and Bring and Buy which this year will be on the 14th May. Last year lots of our members and friends begged, borrowed, took cuttings and grew seeds for this evening and it was very successful. Hopefully, we shall do the same this year. So, once the weather warms up a little and the days start to get longer, if you could think of our Bring and Buy when you are out in your own garden and you have things that you could take cuttings from or divide and grow on, then please think of the Horticultural Society.

Our Annual Membership is £3, with meetings costing £1 to members and £2 to non-members. We would love to see some new members and you can be sure of a warm and friendly welcome. Our talks usually last for about an hour and then we have a chat with other members whilst enjoying tea/coffee and biscuits.  The talks cover a range of different aspects of gardening and our programme is planned to provide something of interest to each and everyone of us.

I am planning to run two coach trips this year - one on Friday 15th June leaving Wickhambrook at 8.30 to Glen Chantry where we will spend the morning and than in the afternoon go to Hyde Hall Gardens, leaving there at 5 o’clock.

The other coach trip will be on Saturday 28th July to Capel Manor Gardens where, as well as the lovely gardens there, there will be a Summer Flower and Fuchsia Show. This leaves at 9 o'clock and leaves Capel Manor at 5 o'clock. The cost for each trip will be approximately £15/16. Please ring me if you want to put your names down.
