London's
Burning by the children of Wickhambrook Primary School
The children have recently completed a project about the Great Fire
of London
and some of the things that they wrote and their drawings are shown
below
Sunday 2nd September 1666
Today there was a big fire in London. There were lots of people
crying “fire fire”! People say that the fire started
in the baker’s shop. The fire spread quickly because the
houses were so close together and made of wood. The Town Crier
was ringing a bell in the city. They had to go on boats to get
away. They could not go over the bridge because the fire had
burnt it down. It took a long time to put it out. They used
wooden buckets to put out the fire. After the fire stopped the
people built a new city. Everyone helped with the building.
Even the children helped. All the people built the houses out
of stone and slate, and then bricks and straw. Now we’ve
invented better shops.
Sunday 2nd September 1666
Today a big fire started. People say that the fire started in
a baker’s shop in Pudding Lane. People shouted fire fire
I ran out of my house into the street. I went running to the
river and climbed into a boat and rode to the other side of
the river. The fire burnt for seven days. We put out the fire
with wooden and metal buckets. A few years later the city was
rebuilt. This time they built it with stone and bricks.
On Sunday 2nd September 1666
I opened by eyes and I saw a red glow it look like a big fire.
They said that it started in Pudding Lane in the bakers shop.
The people ran to the river and they climbed into the boats
and tried to get away. After a little while the people built
London with stone and bricks so it won’t burn down now.
