Has anybody heard of the WISKIN family who came from Wickhambrook.  There was a CATHERINE WISKIN born in the village about 1779, who was a midwife.  She was the mother of WILLIAM WISKIN born there about 1803.  He married ELIZA and they had a lot of children one of whom was my Great-great Grandfather WOOTTON WILLIAM WISKIN.  Can anyone help?  Our email address is josephine.gregory@wanadoo.fr

CHALLIS FAMILY
Hello, I wonder if you can help me in my search for details on the CHALLIS family. I have only just decided to research my family tree via my mother's line and I know that my great-grandmother was MARY ANN CHALLIS who was born in Wicham Brook in about 1875. The 1901 census has her listed as living at Clopton Green. She was married to WILIAM AGER (Boot Maker) and at that time had two children - ROSE AND FANNY (Fanny being my grandmother). They went on to have another daughter DAISY and a son PERCY. I understand from my own mother that PERCY would now be about 93 years of age if he is still alive.

PLEASE NOTE NEW EMAIL ADDRESS (Jan 2008)
Many thanks for reading this and I hope that someone may be able to help me in my New Year's quest! - click here to email Joan

I have a Harriet Husk b.c.1824 at Wickhambrook, Suffolk. Father William and mother Mary. Harriet married William Barton in Weston Colville 1852. In 1855 they departed for life in Australia. 15yr old Harriet was an "FS" (Farm Servant?) at Gaines' Hall at the time of the 1841 Census. I believe her father William died 15 January 1849, aged 55yrs, All Saints Wickhambrook, Suffolk. Any information would be most appreciated. Hope to visit area 2008. Des (contact Des here)

PYKE FAMILY - I wonder if you can assist me. I am trying to trace details of this family. I know that the Rev C Pyke was the vicar of Wickhambrook in the 19th century, I am guessing at the 1850's and his 4th son Henry died in Tasmania. I see that the name Pyke appear's today in church and other matters, and it would be interesting to know if any of them were descendents. The reason for my interest is that I live in Tasmania in the house which was occupied in 1905/6 by Harriet and Ada Pyke. They were spinster sister's and both died at the end of December 1906. Their grave is in the local (Latrobe) Cemetery and I am attempting to restore it as of course it is now almost 100 year's since they died. I have also discovered where their father is buried and intend to visit this site also, its approx 120km from Latrobe. I also have a copy photo of Harriet and Ada, and another sister. A brother is also mentioned in the newspaper death notice. It seem's possible that an aunt of their's was married into the Glover family of which John Glover the artist was the head. If any of this is of interest to anyone, or there are contact's you can give for any further information that I can obtain from the UK I would be pleased to receive them. By the way although I have an Ordnance Survey Map Book I cannot find Baythorne End Park. I am certain that it is in your area and not in Somersetshire as inscribed on the gravestone. Regards, Ivor Craft. [ivor.craft@bigpond.com]

PRYKE and HOUGHTON
I am descended from James PRYKE (born c. 1777) and his wife Martha HOUGHTON. Their daughter Adeliza Pryke (born 1821) who married Joseph Henry SIMPSON is my 2 Greats Grandmother. I am interested in hearing from anyone researching these surnames.

James Pryke farmed in Ashfield Green, but I do not know exactly where, as the censuses do not give the name of the farm. (James died in 1846 and the farm was then inherited by his son John Houghton Pryke). Does anyone with local knowledge know where James's farm was? Is there anywhere in the village today called Pryke's farm?

There is a rumour that the Prykes may have owned Gains Hall at one time, but I have not been able to find any information to substantiate this. I know that from the 1850s to 1901 it was owned by the Isaacson family. Does anyone know who owned Gains Hall prior to this? (Something I read on another web forum said James Pryke's father, also James Pryke, owned Gains Hall and broke his neck 6 months after he was married and died. I am trying to find out where this story came from and if it is true!!)

I live in Berkshire, so do not know the local area. Any help anyone is able to give me will be gratefully received. Please contact me at susan_coe@btopenworld.com Many thanks.
