Report November and December 2003
Hall Decorations
Have you seen the hall decorations this year? They must be the best ever! Thanks are due to Margaret Coote, Kathy French and Kathy and Alan Cordy who decorated the main hall for their Christmas Fayre on Sunday 7th December. But the benefit was also enjoyed by the 40 or more members of the Swimming Club at their evening social on Friday 5th, by a private hirer from Barnadiston who brought a party of over 80 to our village, by all the pupils, parents and teachers, when, for the first time, Wickhambrook School staged their Christmas Show on Thursday 11th, by all the family and friends of a Poslingford couple whose wedding was celebrated on the 20th, and by the 100+ revellers at the New Years Eve bash. Not to mention all the regular weekday and evening hirers whose activities continued through December right up to Christmas. On behalf of the several hundred people who enjoyed their use of the hall all the more for your efforts, Margaret, Kathy, Alan and Kathy - many thanks indeed! You did us proud.

The Memorial Social Centre Trustees have met on two occasions since the last issue of the Scene. Among the reports from the Caretaker was the location of our oil tank apparently after many years in its present location on the kitchen roof it is now not safe there and will have to be moved to another spot on the ground, further enquiries to be made. It was also reported that since the rubbish bin had been locked the amount placed inside it had decreased to such an extent that a smaller version is to be sought. As we have to pay for the bins there might be a slight saving, again further enquiries are to be made with the Council.

Since the Youth club has begun to operate again it was reported its number of youngsters has increased from twenty one to forty eight. There is also a slight worry concerning the non members who attend and hang around outside. This will be closely monitored.

In the absence of the Treasurer it was reported that funds were still in a healthy state at present, but quite a large expenditure was expected in the near future with the installation of the Accessible Toilet and other improvements being made for the benefit of disabled persons.

Some correspondence has taken place with the Bowls and Tennis Clubs following the Parish Council's contact with the Clubs regarding payment of ground rent. It is hoped the situation will resolve itself as the Parish Council have stated they do not wish the Memorial Social Centre to lose its payments for the Clubs. Once again further enquiries are being made with the Parish Council and the Clubs.

The Wickhambrook Players brought up some various suggestions for improving the Stage in the Memorial Social Centre. The ideas were well received by the Trustees and approval was given for them to take place to include close liaison with the Trustees as the work takes place.

The heating in the Memorial Social Centre was again discussed. It was felt that it was not warm enough. It has cost a large amount of money to install and still does not seem adequate to heat the premises to a satisfactory level. It was decided that the original heating engineers should be contacted and their views sought on a possible solution. All users if you are cold when using the Memorial Social Centre then please let any member of the trustees know.

The state of the floor in the main hall was raised. It was stated that the Badminton white lines were now almost non existent and the general state of the surface was very poor. Quotes are being obtained with a view to a complete overhaul of the floor to take place in the near future.

The next meeting of the full Trustees Committee will take place in the Memorial Social centre on Monday 5th January 2004 at 7.30pm. All representatives please note and attend if you can. Thank you.

Finally may I wish all readers on behalf of the Memorial Social Centre Trustees a Very Happy and Prosperous New Year.
