Issue No. 207 - November and
December 2003
To our many readers I feel that I must
congratulate you on your sense of the absurd. It is now ten years
since I started writing this load of old cobblers and still you read
it. Ah well there's no accounting for taste so here goes again.
Again, looking for inspiration, I browsed through the last issue and
discovered this little gem in the W.I.
bit. A talk on "How the W.I. market spiced up my life"!
Now the mind boggles, just what are they putting in the jams and chutneys
these days? Unfortunately we were on holiday at the time of the meeting
when the talk took place so "Er-indoors" missed it. If,
however, some kindly soul believes that this information would prove
invaluable at "Chez Fieldsend" I can be contacted at the
above address. (Oh the endless faith in hope over experience.- Er-
indoors.)
Once again we have an article from Tom Bowers on the joys of living
in rural France and, it being the November edition, he describes how
the French mark Armistice Day. I must say that I always enjoy reading
Tom's articles as they compare the two rural communities that he knows
so well. I must admit that being an avid viewer of the television
programmes that show people moving abroad to live I am often tempted
myself, but as "Er - indoors says, "They don't have pantomimes
abroad." That may be true at the moment but with Colin the postman
moving there "Watch that space".
Speaking of the Panto
as you will see from other articles in this edition the next one is
under way and rehearsals started this very week.
Now a mystery. As many know after the recent death of Mrs Violet Marrow
it was believed that the recipe for her famous "Cheese Biscuits
went to the grave with her. Now being a fairly new arrival in the
village (I've only lived here for sixteen years.) I only know them
by repute but apparently their fame spreads far beyond Wickhambrook
and no church fete or feast was complete without them. However at
the end of last week there arrived on my doormat a recipe claiming
to be the one for the famous cheese biscuits. By whom it was delivered
and from whence it came I know not. I haven't even had the chance
to try them, (Eating them, not baking them I'm not that good.) as
Er-indoors and myself are in the midst of the pre Christmas diet.
Anyway the aforesaid diet is printed elsewhere in this issue and in
the belief that surely no one would wish to see such a treasure lost
to posterity.
Well once again that's it, all that is left to do is wish you all
you would wish for yourself for the festive season and the coming
year from Er-indoors myself and the rest of the production team.
As newer issues of The Scene are published, some articles that
are regular features in The Scene will be updated and so will not
have a link back to this page
