So here we go again, fingers poised over keyboard, dictionary and
swear box at the ready and another whole fiscal year to make a cock
up of. If my typing seems rather hesitant please forgive me but I'm
suffering from the cold. Now I know that it is just as cold for everyone
else, but unlike me, they have not spent the last three weeks in the
steaming jungles of South East Asia facing malaria, poisonous spiders,
scorpions and snakes just to bring a little excitement and adventure
to this column, and all this in temperatures that hovered around the
100 degrees f. (I don't know what he's talking about, it was a very
nice hotel in Northern Thailand with ice cold beer, hot and cold running
barmaids and the closest he got to wildlife was watching them fish
a couple of frogs out of the swimming pool one morning. Er-Indoors.)
I was pleased however to be back in time to attend the get-together
in the hall arranged by the hall management committee. This was designed
to give all the clubs and societies in the village the chance to show
what they did and hopefully recruit some new members, and well represented
they were. Everyone from the school and the churches to the historians,
horticulturists and the fire brigade turned out. Players, whether
of the dramatic, football, snooker or tennis kind were there and a
good time was had by all. I don't know how the other groups got on
but the Wickhambrook Players were recruiting left right and centre
especially among the youngsters who having seen the panto were eager
to try for the Junior Players next production 'Annie' which is due
to be performed at the beginning of Carnival
Week. (N.B. Annie now cancelled)
(There is a slight pause of some four days at this stage of the proceedings
as your Editor was suddenly struck down with a severe case of the
"Ooh nasties." And has spent four days in bed. Well, either
in bed or in the loo.) (That's more than enough information thank
you. Er-Indoors).
And now a little plea, (and you have no idea what a right little pleader
he can be. Er-Indoors) if you have anything you want to say, a story,
a comment an idea you want to air, anything that will help fill the
pages between the front adverts and the back ones, then let me have
it. Contributors are more than welcome.
One last thing before I go, on arriving home from my holiday I was
informed that the price of beer in the Greyhound
had gone up yet again! This is at least the second, or even third
price hike this year and each time it is by 5 new pence. Well good
luck to them and may it bring the brewery much joy, but don't go brewing
my share this time around because I won't be buying it!! £2.30p
for a pint of ordinary 'Cooking Bitter' is taking the mickey BIG TIME.
Earlier this year while I was back home in Derbyshire I had a pub
lunch where I could have bought a pint of Abbot Ale (Greene Kings
premier Ale) for ten pence less than I could buy a pint of ordinary
I.P.A. in my local. The Greyhound is about 10 miles from the brewery
and the Gate Inn at Cutthorpe near Chesterfield is approximately 150
miles from the brewery. Locally Abbott Ale sells for about ten pence
more than I.P.A.
Now don't think I'm having a go at Ian and Theresa in this because
I'm not, they are only trying to make a living but with the breweries
setting the rents and setting the price of beer plus the rise of business
rates it has to be an uphill struggle. I wish the people with the
power to create all these raises would do the same for my pensions
but they won't. So it's off down the supermarket to stock up with
whatever is on special offer, after all it all goes the same way down
doesn't it.
Well having had me gripe that's about it for this time, so farewell
from a fed up and shaky editor, and an even more fed up Er-Indoors.
P.S. Fame at last, there has apparently been a hit on the Wickhambrook
website looking for the Er-Indoors magazine.

Collection for Colin
Bird
The collection for the popular local postman Colin Bird, who is shortly
to leave us for Spain amounted to £393.00. This is to be presented
to him in a simple ceremony at his house without any fuss. It was
Colin's request that we do it like this and I shall be happy to abide
by it.
