Report of Events in September and October 2003
Autumn is again a busy time for the W.I. September we welcomed back Molfrey French-Owen whose talk 'How the W.I. spiced up my life' was full of humour and advice. She had built up a thriving business after first selling a few bottles of ginger wine made from a family recipe at the W.I. Markets. She now tours the country for several months of the year selling all sorts of home made ginger products. An outing was arranged to see 'Calendar Girls' and the group meeting was also this month at Horringer. The speaker, Professor Michael Slinn, gave a dramatic account of the life of Van Gogh. He had visited the places which the artist had painted and compared his slides with the paintings, all still very much the same. A very entertaining evening. Val Orange, one of our members, again organised a record breaking Coffee Morning in aid of the MacMillan Nurses in the W.I. Hall.

The Autumn Council meeting was held in the Corn Exchange , Bury St. Edmunds in early October. This is when delegates and visitors from all the institutes of the Suffolk West Federation meet to hear about National and County events and shields and certificates are presented. The speaker, Zena Skinner, was one of the first T.V. cooks (she started in 1959) Black and white, live broadcasts, mikes hidden in cabbages - nothing had to go wrong, but of course something always did! Ray Upson made a welcome return with his beautiful slides of flowers and butterflies to the October meeting.
The Walking Club now meets every Wednesday, some weeks the walkers have lunch in local pubs. Check the board for information. The Reading Group meet every month. Last month's theme was to compare childhood favourite books with modern writing for children. Quite a difference! There have been complaints about excessive noise from the Hall on some evenings. It would help the committee to have these written down, giving times and dates, so action can be taken. On advice from the Environmental Officer of Health, band practices will end at 8pm.
