Nostalgia has been the theme for the first
two meetings of the year. January saw several members talking about
their childhood memories. There was an exhibition of clothes, books
and photographs from the 40s to the 60s along with sweets and drinks.
The most well remembered things being the freedom of 'playing out'
and the distances walked to get to school in all weathers.
Our speaker at the February meeting was author and broadcaster Michael
Bentinck talking about 'Wartime Women'.
An excellent raconteur he kept his audience rapt with happy, poignant
and just plain daft stories of ordinary women doing extraordinary
things just to survive through the war years and beyond. This brought
many happy memories for some members but was an excellent evening
for all.
The Reading Group celebrated its first birthday with a lunch when
this year's programme was planned. Members are also going to the Theatre
Royal in February and the Athenaeum in March to hear Joanna Trollope
speak about her new book.
Wednesdays are when the Walking club meet and details are always on
the notice board. Future plans include a Spring outing, details later,
and a Quiz evening on 16th October. The Air Ambulance is our charity
for this year and the July meeting will be a Bring & Buy to aid
their funds. If anyone has an old mobile phone then please give it
to any member as the Air Ambulance receives £5 for each one
collected.
